Arlo Pro 2 Review – Best Wireless Home Security Camera

The Arlo Pro 2 is among the greatest wireless home security cameras I have reviewed. Previously owned by Netgear, the Arlo Pro 2 is the organization's flagship product featuring 1080p video resolution, wide-angle lens, advanced motion detection, and integration with a extensive selection of house automation platforms. To figure out how the Arlo Guru 2 compares to other house security cameras, check out my complete roundup.

The Arlo Pro 2 is unquestionably among the most effective outdoor cameras in Arlo's lineup, including full HD (1080p) video resolution, audio detection, geo-fencing plus much more. I have had an Arlo Guru 2 apparel for the previous several weeks and still love it. One of the greatest characteristics of the Arlo Pro 2 and its siblings are the magnetic mounts that allow you to set up the surveillance cameras anywhere inside or outside the home, without needing to worry about cables.

As soon as I obtained the Arlo Pro 2 inspection units, I needed to choose where to position them inside or outside of our house. Ultimately, I decided to procure the perimeter to capture possible intruders before they can enter the house. I had two Arlo Guru two cameras at my disposal, so I positioned one at the main entry and the other one over the door leading to the patio on the back of the home.
Installation and Setup

Setup and installation of this Arlo Guru 2 camera kit required about ten minutes. After unwrapping the camera kit, then I attached the Arlo Hub to my APC Back-UPS Pro 1500VA (), therefore it stays on in case we lose power, and to my Unifi switch through an ethernet cable. Then I paired both cameras with the Hub before I mounted them.

I then downloaded the Arlo program from the App Store, made an account and connected the camera kit on it.

All I had to do was secure the magnets utilizing one wood screw and pop on the Arlo Pro security camera.

The drawback of this magnetic mounts and easy installation is that somebody could as easily steal the camera by just popping it off the mount. Of course, whenever the Arlo Pro 2 camera is recording, you would have the footage and then live feed of the incident, but there is no guarantee that you'll get your camera again. So I'd advise that you mount the camera high enough up, therefore it is not at arm's reach. The drawback of doing this is that you will need a ladder or step stool when it's time to recharge the battery. I opted to go the handy route and to take the risk of someone stealing the camera while being recorded.

The Arlo Hub supports an Assortment of customizable and pre-defined modes, including:

For each style, except for Disarmed, you can configure rules to ascertain what cameras to include and what should happen if motion or audio is detected. For example, we have set our"Front Door" camera to capture video and send drive and email notifications if it detects movement and while it is in Equipped mode.

Our aim was to arm the cameras while both of us are away from the geofence. While at home, we want the cameras to document if they detect motion, but without sending alerts. That way, we've got footage of anyone coming to the house without creating a great deal of false alerts. The exception to that rule is night . While we are sleeping, we would like to receive notification if any of the cameras detect movement in their surveillance areas.

To make this scenario work, we use a mixture of a custom mode, geofencing, and a program.

Visit Mode within the Arlo app.
Create a brand new custom mode that tells the camera to record video when it detects motion and, optionally, audio but without sending alarms.
Then, edit the Program mode and define what manners Arlo should apply during the designated times.

In our case, I told Arlo to use the standard"Armed" mode from 9 -- 11:59 pm and 12 -- 7:59 am (overnight) and also to use my customized mode throughout 8 am -- 8:59 pm. The latter, as I said, records video without even sending notifications.

Last but not least, I selected Geofencing as the busy mode and configured it to Select These modes for the two cameras:

    Off Mode: Armed
    Home Mode: Schedule

Geo-fencing

If Arlo finds that both devices are out of range, it automatically arms . That means, it records and notifies us if one of the cameras detects noise or motion. If one of those mobiles is inside the geo-fence, the two cameras still record video when someone or something triggers the sound or motion sensor, but we wont receive a notification. Geo-fencing with the Arlo Pro 2 camera works on the first-in, last-out principle.

Troubleshooting tip: Throughout our testing geo-fencing didn't do the job properly, and it appeared to have ignored my wife's iPhone. To fix the matter, I had to remove both phones from the geo-fencing configuration, disable geo-fencing and then re-enable it for both telephones. Also, be certain that you open the Arlo program after installing an program or operating system upgrade. On one occasion, after upgrading iOS on my wife's iPhone X, then she got logged from the Arlo program, which briefly ceased geo-fencing from working on her device.
Power origin

What I enjoy about the Arlo Pro 2 cameras is that I can operate them using a rechargeable battery, an optional solar panel which keeps the battery charged, or using a power cord. That gives you a great deal of flexibility in regards to camera placement!

In case you decide to wire an Arlo Pro two camera and you sign up for one of Arlo's subscription programs, you can even enable continuous recording, but Arlo restricts this attribute to indoor cameras. I really don't know why this is, because Arlo provides both indoor and outdoor power adapters.

The Arlo Guru 2 battery life is 2-6 months, based on my experience and use. I installed both of my cameras at the end of May 2018, and on August 9th, front door camera revealed a remaining battery lifetime of 38%. I had to recharge the battery of this terrace camera already because we had a series of lights in front of that camera which continuously triggered the movement sensor whenever it had been windy outside. Because of this, the camera was recording a lot, which drained the batterylife. We've since removed the bulbs, which stopped that behavior and the battery usage has normalized consequently.

If you anticipate a lot of action in an area that your Arlo Pro 2 camera screens, I would recommend considering adding a solar panel, or , buying replacement batteries.

Should you get an excess pair of batteries, you'll also need to find a charging station that Arlo sells individually.
Motion Detection

1. The default is PIR-only detection. This is due to the constraints of this camera being battery powered. Pixel-based analytics will deplete the battery in a few hours. This works very well for me at discovering people and animals with minimal false alarms.

2. In case Arlo is plugged-in into AC power, you can place one or more motion-zones. Within this configuration, discovery happens only if there is pixel-based movement inside a zone AND that a PIR detection. This stands to be considerably more powerful against false alarms than purely pixel-based motion detection as you must have pixel changes and a hot body.

3. Arlo Smart Person Detection -- A brand new paid feature that tries to ascertain when a person triggered the motion detector. It worked fairly well for me when I tested it.

4. This is a brand new paid attribute very similar to two but functions on battery power. All of PIR detections are sent to the cloud for motion zone investigation.
